Removal from General Education
In
Connecticut's IEP form,
the student's percentage of Time With Non-Disabled
Peers (TWNDP) will be in a section labeled "Removal from the General Education
Environment," as seen below. There will be statements to the extent (how much,
how often) to which the student will not participate in general education classes
and nonacademic activities with non-disabled peers, as well as the justification
(reason why) for the removal from the general education environment. Whenever a
student is removed from the general education environment for 60% or more of the
time, the Planning and Placement Team (PPT) must complete the
Least Restrictive Environment (LRE) Checklist.
In basic terms,
LRE
refers to the setting where a
student with a disability can receive an appropriate education designed to meet
their educational needs, alongside peers without disabilities to the maximum extent
appropriate. The
Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA)
says that
students with disabilities should not be removed from the general educational
environment unless the nature or severity of the disability is such that education
in regular classes with the use of
supplementary aids and services
cannot be
achieved satisfactorily. The student's IEP should include the services and supports
the student needs to make meaningful progress in their LRE, and any removal from
the general education environment will be documented in the IEP as seen below:
